Interview with Ivonne Wierink – Stock photographer from the Netherlands
Can you please introduce yourself to our readers?
I am Ivonne Wierink, 57 years, born and living in the Netherlands.
For how long time you have worked as a photographer/photo agency, and how did you decide to shoot photography?
For the past 4 years, I have been a full time stock-photographer. In 2007 I had a tough back operation, and was forced to lay on the bed for months. I had plenty enough time to surf on the internet with my laptop, and discovered the opportunity to work as stock-photographer.
Have you studied photography, or did you learn on the job?
I have followed many workshops, but no real studies as such.
How do you see the state of Stock Photography?
I think the market is still growing. There is always a need for new compositions, more modern clothes, technology etc. In this time of recession more magazines and newspapers are using stockphotos.
What is the most memorable experience in your career?
My first sold picture. I earned 36 cents with it, and bought a cakes to go with my coffee!
From what or from whom you think you have learned the most?
Other stock photographers. Not for imitating, but for playing with ideas.
What is your common shooting day like?
I make a list from what to shoot, go to the shops, or welcome my models in my studio. Then I make coffee, there is never a moment without my pot of coffee! And then I start to shoot, sometimes I forget to eat, as I get so excited and into it!
What do you like the most in your work?
To shoot. To play with cool ideas.
What do you dislike the most in your work? If anything?
To upload, give them keywords etc. Not very interesting ! I’d rather be shooting!
Every photographer has their own style – what is your very own style that makes it possible for you to stand out from the rest?
Colors. My images are mostly very colorful, I like that, and customers do also.
What kind of photography equipment do you use?
I have all the professional stuff. A very good light table, backgrounds for models, my own studio, many studio-lights. A Nikon DS3-body, with all the F2.8-lenzes you need. And a 30 inch monitor for good editing. I have a server for safety storage of all my images, and back them up on a regular basis.
What kind of topics you prefer to shoot/distribute?
I have no specific topics. Although I have a preference for shooting summer pictures at the beach as the environment is more better than at home
What kind of photos sell the best?
Product-photo’s with bright colors on a clean white background.
What kind of an image is the ideal one for you?
Ones like these..
Do you have any hints you would like to share with photographers just starting their career?
Yes, pay attention to white backgrounds. Most newbies started with gray etc. because they don’t necessarily know how to make it clear/white. White backgrounds are very sellable.
Is there something new/different you still would like to do in the future? In photography, or in common?
No, every day is new to me. I think always about the day of tomorrow, about new shoots, still lives, products, animals, places.
What would you like to say to our customers?
Be critical, there is so much to buy. Look for more creativity, more originality. Buyers are often illustrating text, to grab the attention of their readers.
